Mrs. Lucinda Lynn died yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.W. Seawright, on east Wabash avenue at the ripe old age of four score and three years. Her maiden name was McConnell. She was born in Hamilton, Ohio, April 22, 1815. She came to this county with her parents in 1824, settling on a farm south of the city, and later moving to town where she has since resided. She was one of a family of eight children, of which there is now but one living, Mrs. J.H. Benefiel, of this city. In 1835 she was married to James H. Lynn, who has been dead for many years. Four children were born, one dying in infancy, Wm. H. Lynn, whose death occurred in 1884, and Mrs. Margaret Seawright and Mrs. Mary E. Patterson who still survive/ Mrs. Lynn was a member of the Presbyterian church, uniting with that organization many years ago under Rev. James Thomson, and was a faithful adherent till the day of her death. She was a woman noted for her good deeds and many excellent qualities of mind and heart. For many years her public activities have ceased because of age and affliction but her kind deeds are remembered by many. Such a character as serves to sweeten life was that of Mrs. Lynn, and her good deeds are a monument which reaches the skies. Lucinda McConnell was born in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio, April 22, 1815, and departed this life April _, 1899, aged 83 years, 11 months and _ days. With her parents she came to this county in 1824, where they settled on a farm just south of town shortly afterwards moving into the town of Crawfordsville, where Miss McConnell was for many years justice of the peace. She was one of a family of eight children, only one of whom survives her, Mrs. Jane Benefiel, of this city.
She was married in 1835 to James W. Lynn, who had settled here in 1826. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lynn, the first dying when an infant and William H. in 1884. Mrs. Margaret G. Seawright and Mrs. Mary Edna Patterson survive her.
Mrs. Lynn united with the old Presbyterian Church of this city under the pastorate of Rev. James Thomson when quite young, and those who knew her best know how consistent with her profession her life has been. Mrs. Lynn lived fully up to the character of her Savior in forgetting herself in loving service for others. Her life was full of good and kindly deeds, most often done in secret, not letting her right hand know what her left hand has done. Her home was always open to the homeless, the unfortunate and the sorrowing, whether of her own kindred or strangers. While to the younger generations she may not be very well known, there are yet many living in Crawfordsville, where her life has been spent, who will miss her kindly smile of welcome and loving words of solicitude for their welfare every time she met them.
Such a life cannot have been lived in vain. The Holy Scriptures say that “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.” Surely this is true of such a well rounded out life as hers whose loss we mourn. Calmly and peacefully her life ended, falling asleep in this world to awaken in the presence of the King.
